Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral is one of the most popular churches in the world, and is a popular tourist attraction in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The original church officially opened in 1895, though it was almost lost as a location due to initially not having enough funds to put up a complete building, yet it was popular from the start. It has undergone multiple changes over the years, along with name changes. It started out only being called Christ Church, and in 1929 it was renamed Cathedral Church of the Diocese. In 1971, there was a study conducted to talk about demolishing the old church and putting up a new one. After years of wrangling, the cathedral was designated as a Heritage building, effectively putting its demolition on hold.

In 1995, the church underwent more renovation, first addressing the outside of the church, which was completed in 1998. Then the inside renovations began, and for the year between April 2003 and April 2004, the church was closed down. These two phases of renovation have made the church what it is today.

The church has had a prominent history in Canada. It has served as the final resting place for many well known Canadians, been visited by Queen Elizabeth before she was queen, and then Prince Charles Princess Diana many years later. It is the largest house of worship in the city of Vancouver.

Hotels near the Cathedral range in prices. The most affordable hotel in the area is the Hyatt Regency Vancouver, the most expensive being La Grande Residence at The Sutton Place Hotel.

Other hotels that are close to the Cathedral include: the Metropolitan Hotel; Hotel Le Soleil; Moda Hotel; L’Hermitage; Comfort Inn Downtown Vancouver, and the Westin Grand Vancouver. One final hotel directly across the street from the cathedral is the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, which is right next to the Vancouver Art Gallery.
