Getting a hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, is easy; if you can afford it. There are all sorts of hotels all around the city, from luxury hotels to relatively inexpensive hotels, relative being the magic word, since hotels in Vancouver will cost more, even at the lower levels of quality, than they will in most cities around the world.
Although there are hotels all over Vancouver, the lucky thing for most visitors to the city is that there are plenty of hotels around all tourist attractions, other than the North Shore Mountains, and even if you can’t get a hotel directly next to the attraction you want to see, there are always hotels within, at most, a few minutes of the destination you might want to visit.
The funny thing is that, as of mid May 2009, because of the slump in the Canadian economy, as well as the rest of the world, many hotels in Vancouver actually started to drop prices in trying to entice visitors to stay at their hotels. Some travel experts are saying that travel to Vancouver could be down this summer as much as 10 to 15% because of the economy, and some hotels are trying to alleviate that figure by dropping their prices, some as much as 20%.
Another fear from hotels in Vancouver this year is that they’re not sure when customers are coming. They’ve already reported a slowdown in early online bookings, even though they still seem to be full most weekends. It’s thought that many visitors are making last minute decisions on whether they’re going to be visiting Vancouver or not, which makes it hard for hotels to determine the proper staffing levels during the week. Luckily for them, they’re pretty secure in knowing that they need to maintain high staffing levels on the weekend.
Of course, they’re also anticipating a drastic increase in business come February 2010 when the Winter Olympics come to town. In this case, it means just being able to survive until then, when all the hotels in Vancouver will have a chance to make their mark on the city.
