Museum of Vancouver

The Museum of Vancouver is Canada’s largest civic museum. Located in Vanier Park, the Vancouver Museum is just next to the Pacific Space Centre and just across the way from the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The name has just recently changed from Vancouver Museum, stating in their April newsletter “We are transforming ourselves from an institution into a platform where a community of the curious come to engage in dynamic conversations about what was, what is, and what can be Vancouver.”

Its permanent exhibits include a walk through Vancouver’s past, with tableaux and artifacts tracing the city’s history through each era of the late-19th and 20th centuries. Otherwise, the museum offers an eclectic mixture of art exhibits, mainly concentration on Canadian artists, but also offering such things as an upcoming exhibit of stuffed animals, highlighting taxidermy for the first time in decades.

Along with its permanent displays, the Museum of Vancouver also has some interesting collections. Some of them are:

• The Ronald and Amy Campbell-Johnson collection;
• The Edward and Mary Lipsett collection;
• The argillite carvings from Dr. and Mrs. C.A. Ryan and May W. Henderson;
• First Nations objects collected in 1792 by members of Captain George Vancouver’s crew;
• Japanese swordguards or tsubas collected by Captain Henry Pybus;
• Material from the Marpole Midden and the St. Mungo Cannery site in the Fraser Delta;
• The Hong Kong Bank collection of Asian ceramics collected by Jean Farhni;
• A large historical clothing collection of Vancouver residents;
• Mrs. C. Gardner Johnson’s collection from Oceania
