Stanley Park Vancouver

Stanley Park is one of the largest public parks in North America. At over 1,000 acres, it’s a mixture of forest lands and popular attractions, especially for children.

Stanley Park borders the upper part of the Pacific Ocean, jutting out so that almost the entire land area is surrounded by the ocean. It has gone through many transitions over the course of centuries that has led it to what it’s become now. The first contact between the indigenous tribes that lived there and Europeans came in 1791 when George Vancouver, the British captain for whom the city is named. It wasn’t until 95 years later when a petition came through to turn the area into a park. It opened as a park in 1888, and was named after the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley.

At the present time, Stanley Park is home to attractions natural and man-made. Along with some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world, some of the natural attractions are:

Lost Lagoon
Siwash Rock
Two unique beach fronts

Some of the man-made favorites of Stanley Park include:

• Children’s Farmyard, which is a petting zoo with over 200 animals. There are exhibits of animals such as birds and reptiles, along with farm animals such as sheep, goats, and pigs.

• Miniature Train, which is an actual mini-train that goes throughout the forest for 1 ¼ miles.

• Brockton Point Lighthouse, one of two lighthouses serving the Port of Vancouver.

• Japanese Canadian War Memorial, erected in memory of Japanese Canadians that served in the First World War.

• Vancouver Aquarium, the largest aquarium in Canada that houses dolphins, belugas, sea lions, seals, and sea otters.
