Vancouver Art Gallery

The Vancouver Art Gallery is the fifth largest art gallery in Canada, and the largest art gallery in western Canada. Even though it’s rumored to potentially be moving to a new location, there’s been no movement on the project, so it’s still in its same location in Vancouver and is one of the top attractions in the city.

Talk about having a great place to be, the Vancouver Art Gallery is located in the second main courthouse for the city. It’s over 165,000 square feet, with ionic columns, a central dome, formal porticos, and ornate stonework. The building was constructed using imported marble.

As a norm, the art gallery usually has around 9,000 items on exhibit at any time, an astounding number of pieces for any art gallery. Per the director of the art gallery, they “feature the work of leaders in the field of contemporary art and Vancouver’s internationally renowned artists, including Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Stan Douglas, Rodney Graham, Roy Arden and Brian Jungen, serving as a portal for their remarkable achievements while furthering British Columbia’s artistic legacy. The Gallery also houses the magnificent works of significant historical artists, including the most extensive collection of the work of Canada’s beloved Emily Carr.”

Of course, the art gallery also showcases art from artists other than Canadian artists. Recent exhibits have shown the work of Rembrandt and other Dutch artists. There was also a more modern exhibit of photographs from the German photographer Andreas Gursky. The gallery loves being able to exhibit such an eclectic collection of artists and styles.

It’s hard to take in 9,000 pieces of art in one day, as well as other surrounding tourist attractions, so luckily, there are plenty of hotels close by, all less than half a mile, and fitting any budget. Some of those hotels are:
